Any fan of sci-fi comedies should not miss a chance to see the cult classic that is "Buckaroo Banzai". Sure, it's somewhat low budget "So what, big deal", but the writing is hilarious ("No, no, no, don't tug on that, you don't know what it might be attached to"), the actors are excellent (lots of very well-known faces from Peter Weller to Christopher Lloyd and one of John Lithgow's best character performances ever at Dr. Lizardo, IMO) and the tons of favorite quotable lines that will be with you forever. "Laugh while you can, Monkey Boy!" When the film came out in the mid-80s, it bombed at the box office. No surprise since nobody understood the rough gem at the time. "Use more honey!" It wasn't until it came out on VHS tape that the film begin to gather a following, which has grown bigger and bigger over the years and continues strongly today, more so with the great Special Edition DVD. Thanks to that release, the popularity of Banzai has continued with stories in comic form, literally starting with an adaptation of what might have been a telemovie is not for legal woes with a spiteful producer that held the rights to the film for a good many years. After his death, W.D. Richter was finally able to buy back control of the property, thus allowing the DVD to be released and further tales of Team Banzai in art form. So far, anything left unanswered in the film, the novel and the original Marvel comic adaptation has been covered in the new Moonstone comic stories. "Pictures don't lie. The hell they don't. I met my first wife that way."
Concerning the soundtrack, the Billy Vera and Peter Weller tracks are direct rips from the film since they were never officially released. Until recently, when Richter regained control of the Banzai ownership, a true soundtrack had never come out. The various bonus tracks cover original versions of the two vocal songs used in the movie. As for Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl", here is the trivia on that tune. "When it came time to film the end titles sequence, where Buckaroo and pals are walking around a dry L.A. aqueduct (across from the former Sherman Oaks Mall) in step to the music, the song wasn't ready. Composer 'Michael Boddicker' told the film crew to use "Uptown Girl" by Billy Joel as a placeholder, because it was the exact same tempo. Those scenes were filmed with "Uptown Girl" blaring from a boom box tied to the back of the camera truck."
Ever since Banzai began to gather a following, it has been given subtitle homage in dozens of films and TV shows (especially Star Trek: The Next Generation) with character quotes, props and names, like the famous Yoyodyne Propulsion Systems. When did W.D. Richter die? I never heard that he had and I'm not finding any record of it online.
One of the best damn flicks ever. I dug it so much, I even read the novelization. the book is pretty sweet as it plays off the idea that Buckaroo is a real person, and the book is kind of a retelling by one of Buckaroos crew. awesome soundtrack too!
Start getting the comics since you are as big a fan as myself. I have the original Marvel 2-part comic adaptation, the novel, the S.E. DVD, all of the comics so far and a frame mini poster. Go here for info on the current comic stories: http://www.moonstonebooks.com/banzai.asp
