The Wizard Of Speed And Time (1989) - Score - John Massari (Thanks JC For Sharing!)

This quirky entry from the end of the 80’s has a cult following. The film is a send-up of itself, shamelessly self-aware before that kind of filmmaking was popular. The movie? The Wizard of Speed and Time, from an original short film of the same name, crated in 1979 by special effects technician and filmmaker, Mike Jittlov.

Jittlov started at UCLA as a math major. When he needed to fulfill his art requirement, he took an animation class, and the rest is history. Several short films followed, entered into festivals, and winning awards. Jittlov worked for Disney with various short films, and hoped for a full-length feature in Hollywood. The struggle to make it in Hollywood became the basis of the story in his film, The Wizard of Speed and Time, which itself was a commercial failure, much like his own attempts at the system which are documented and recreated in the film. Many of his previous short films appear at length in the movie, including references to his Disney work. (Did you ever see that short with the Mickey Mouse satellite that orbited the earth and helped launch the Disney Channel?)

Interesting trivia about this film. It took five years to make, and was finally released in 1989. The principal photography of the actors included a young Philip Michael Thomas, whose very next project was the hot new police drama, Miami Vice.

John Massari composed the music heard in the film (and the original 1979 short film the movie was based on). Previously, you may have heard his music in Killer Klowns from Outer Space, and most recently the sound design on Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance.”

Wow - this is one my favorite movies. Mike Jittlov actually posted the torrent for the full film a few years ago. Thanks for posting the score.

Wow, how in the heck did whoever put this together get a clean version of the ORIGINAL WOST tune from the short?!?! I love that one and never liked the redux for the feature.

BTW - little bit of fun trivia. A few years back while scouring the Extreme music library for a show I was producing, I found the WOST theme song (The Wizard Run on the soundtrack)! It had been renamed Light Riot. I find this a lot while auditioning library music. At some point, it could show up in a Pizza Hut commercial.

hey facerfitz

nice, i'll have to find that torrent. no problem about posting the score pal.

not sure who ripped this. according to JC he said he found it on some blog but cannot remember where. before i asked him where he got it i assumed he did the rip himself. but he did the artwork for this post. the back anyway. interesting trivia bit. what exactly is the Extreme music library tho? sounds interesting too. let me know pal.

take care.

Hey LIP -

Extreme Music is a giant music library we use in TV, film or new media production to score our productions. One of the most FAMOUS library scores is the Dawn Of The Dead score from 1978 - aside from The Goblin score, much of the groovy mall music was from the De Wolfe library. It has since been made available, but for years, the tracks were sought after by finding the old LPs on Ebay. I knew people who had pieced the entire score together over many years. Dedication.

Extreme is very popular right now - they actually have music from A-list composers. Some times, it's tracks that they throw away from film scores. Sometimes they write original music just for the library. Even The Beatles producer, George Martin, has produced tracks for them. I've used them for about 8 years now and when I came across that tune from WoST, it blew me away. Most likely, John Massari still owned the rights to the song (since the movie's legal issues were such a mess) and he decided to license to Extreme. I've heard many familiar songs on TV that I've used from Extreme.

As for whoever ripped the WoST score - the fact that they got the ORIGINAL tune from Jittlov's short film which was made about six years before the feature - along with a bunch of session tapes - shows me they have access to the original material and are fans - not just pulling from the film. Amazing.

IIRC, the "Wizard Run" track was used by ABC Family for promos for their "12 Days of Christmas" last year.

The composer, John Massari, sells this Cd on ebay, you can search for it. I think he compiled it, as I don't think an official release contained all these outtake recordings and such.
